Today, in Indie Comic Roundup, I focus on a few insanely cool looking Kickstarter projects. In ICR #1, we looked at Superhero & High Fantasy books. In ICR #2, it was a look at some real trippy art projects. This episode of ICR is focused on horror…with a side of brutality. Welcome to Indie Comic Roundup #3!
The Infernal Pact
What happens when three junkies make a deal with the Devil? Sex, Drugs, and Damnation. This Grindhouse mini-series tells the tale.
The first project on the roundup is the phenomenal looking, Grindhouse inspired, The Infernal Pact. This 3 issue mini-series is written and drawn by artist Joseph Schmalke, and if the sexy Cover #1 image is any indication, this is going to fucking rock! (Not gonna lie, the woodcut look to of the above image is absolutely stunning! I heart it very much.)
Description from the Kickstarter page:
“Three meth addled friends make some bad choices, very bad choices. While trying to score one day, they sell their souls to a dealer with a sadistic sense of humor. The trio starts waking up in strange places and seeing disturbing things. At first they think it’s a joke, after all, waking up in strange places is nothing new to them, but then the changes start…. They become convinced they have indeed lost their souls and are on a mission to get them back. In their way, is a satanic biker gang, brain-eating zombies and a demon from the depths with its own agenda. Finally, they must make their way to the bowels of Hell to break a deal with the Devil himself.”
With only 3 days left, The Infernal Pact has exceeded its base goal, but there are plenty of great Stretch goals left to unlock. I’ve seen the first 5 pages of this book and trust me, you are going to want to give this book a chance! (Thanks for the sneak peek Joe!)
This isn’t Schmalke’s first indie comic rodeo. Earlier this year, he released The Calamitous Black Devils, a 4 issue mini-series published by Broken Icon Comics, as a graphic novel. Issues #1 and #2 are currently available on comiXology (HERE). The comics and graphic novel are available on his website (HERE) or you can purchase the graphic novel on Amazon (HERE).
Want to keep up on ALL of Schmalke’s work (I highly suggest it), then head on over to his website josephschmalke.com/.
Keep it up Joe, your work kicks ass!
Some things are better left buried…
The second indie comic on the roundup is the Sci/Fi horror comic Judas Breed.
I was just introduced to this project a few days ago, and I gotta say it looks like it’s gonna’ be a good one! It’s written by Kenneth A. Brown (who also owns PenInkColor Studios, the publishing company this book is released by), with art by Ryan Best. A Sci-Fi horror in the vein of Aliens? How the hell could you NOT want to read this?!?
“Judas Breed – The Awakening” is about a woman named Connie Beaumont and her team of NASA scientists who embark on an expedition to an unknown planet in hopes of proving that life once existed there. While searching through one of the caves for micro organisms, Connie falls through a huge hole and finds herself standing in what appears to be a tomb, filled with alien skeletal remains. As the team examines one of the skeletons, Connie finds a fossilized alien anthropod attached to the vertebrae of the skeleton and decides to take it back to the ship. The fossil comes to life, attacks one of the crew members and attaches itself to the victim’s vertebrae. The government finds out and keeps the victim and anthropod for themselves to do studies. While conducting more studies on earth, the victim is transformed into an alien and all hell breaks loose, as aliens threaten the lives of humanity. Connie and a hand full of Marines are forced to go into combat, as they search for the aliens nest to destroy it. This story is about family, government conspiracy, betrayal and the hopes of saving humanity from an alien outbreak.”
Best’s artwork really shines when given bold, dynamic pages to create. His layout, sequencing and color usage (he does the penciling, inking and coloring) for pages 7 & 8 (seen above) is staggeringly good. I find page 8 so visually arresting, it pulls in my eyes…refusing to let go.
This looks like it’s going to be an incredible flagship release for PenInkColor Studios. Great job guys!
“Two tribes of animals find themselves on the brink of war. Will they survive and find peace, or follow humanity into extinction?
The last entry in ICR #3 is a comic I found on Kickstarter (maybe I should have called this the Kickstarter ICR?) called Squarriors.
Before we go any further, let me get a few things out of the way. First, the name really isn’t all that good. Even looking at it, well, it’s just unappealing. Also, there is no real way to avoid the comparisions to Brian Jacques Redwall series.
Talking animals using tools and weapons? Check. Animal clans fighting for dominance? Check. All those things said, this comic still looks absolutely fabulous! It appears brutal, harsh and nasty in all the right ways. And the art…ooh my! The art!
“Squarriors is the epic saga of warring animals in a post-human world. Specifically a small tribe known as the Tin Kin, and their struggles building a life in the new world while confronting the hostile neighboring Maw tribe.
Since the demise of humanity, the remaining animal life have become intelligent and the spark of rational thought creates an internal struggle for the creatures. Do they embrace reason… or follow their savage animal instincts?”
Squarriors is the creation of writer Ash Maczko and artist Ashley Witter, or Team Ash as they are apparently better known as. Squarriors will be broken up into 4, 4-issue series, with each one telling a different story. Each 4 issue mini-series will represent a season of year. The first 4-issue series being, “Spring.” I’m guessing you can figure out the rest…
So there you have it, round three of the Indie Comic Roundup is complete! As always, please take a few minutes to visit these projects, and see if they’re something you’d like to support. Until next time…
