Artist Yulia Brodskaya has been all the rage recently on Facebook. After checking out her new work, I now know why.
I did a post of her work way back in 2011 (The Fantastic Paper Art of Yulia Brodskaya!), and the work was incredible then. But her new work is really quite amazing.
Brodskaya, who started her career as a graphic designer in 2006, creates her works with simple materials: paper and glue. Using the technique known as quilling, she weaves the colored strips of paper into beautiful artworks.
You can see growth in her composition, design and layout of her new works. The use of negative space is wonderful, making the pieces more dramatic, more dynamic.
“I’ve always had a special fascination for paper, it has taken me a while to find my own way of working with it. Now I draw with paper instead of on it. And then it took a little longer to find out that the technique I have been using so intensively is called quilling – it involves the use of strips of paper that can be rolled, shaped, and glued to the background.” -Yulia Brodskaya

It’s a treat to watch artists grow, their craft improve, and their work show that growth. Brodskaya has only been using this form of artistic crafting for 3 years, I can’t wait to see how her work continues to evolve.
My first post about Brodskaya’s work also happened to be her very first piece of quilled work. It kinda feels like getting in on something at the ground floor, I get to watch the evolution of her work from the very beginning. And that…is something special.
