Artist Remi Labarre has a style of painting that conjures up piano bars, lounge acts and old-world cafes. But more than that, his signature style evokes the feeling and emotions of a bygone age.
When I saw his work I was quickly struck by the harsh, almost brutal, brushstrokes. Labarre’s ability to hack out just enough background to ‘finish’ the piece is amazing. It creates a wonderful tension between foreground and background. It’s this unfinished, yet stylistically appropriate, look that brings the images to life.
If Tom Waits were a painter, I think this just might be what his work would look like.
I’ve seen this work now, many, many times, and it never gets old. There is such vibrancy and life in Labarre’s work!
So, Remi LaBarre, for giving the world a modern take on the past, Give Us Art! salutes you! To see more of his work check out his website. For even more art, go to his Facebook page.
