Street Art 101: 15 Terms You Should Know!

If you’ve followed this blog for a while, or read enough of my posts, you know I’ve got a soft spot for Street Art. But, I’m also very picky. It has to have some obvious social commentary or redeeming value. It has to ADD value to the area it’s displayed. Yes, that value can be purely aesthetic. But I prefer work that pushes at or pokes fun of current or relevant social issues. Like the above work by Street Artist superstar Banksy.

So, in the spirit of this, I’m passing along an article on Street Art terminology/slang. It’s not a complete list I’m sure, for that talk to an actual street artist (even then it’s likely the terminology is different regionally). But, it offers you a look into a world you (and I) likely know very little about.

“Like any subculture, street art has developed its own slang. Many street art terms find their roots in the vernacular of graffiti culture, but street art encompasses a much broader range of creative interventions and therefore necessitates more terms. You don’t need to know the lingo to appreciate a mural, but here are 15 Street Art Terms You Should Know to give a bit of insight into street art culture.” MORE
