Embracing Chaos: The Artistic Maelstrom of Calvin Nicholson!

Featured Artist: Today we feature one strange bird. Ok, he’s not actually a bird (I think), but he is strange. But it’s strange in the good way. The artist way. His name is Calvin Nicholson.

I met him quite a few years ago (maybe 6-7 years now) at a house party. That party happened to be located in his house. Well, his and some roommates as I recall. It was actually one of the roommates who’d invited us (through other friends, you know how these things go) and I was feeling very uncomfortable being surrounded by people I don’t know (standard reaction for my by the way).  But once I saw the video game consoles and Calvin’s artwork, I started feeling more comfortable. He seemed like a kindred soul. So I struck up a conversation with him and immediately liked him.

We have seen little of each other since (we met again at a Solstice party…maybe I’ll tell you all about those parties someday) but I’ve always remembered seeing his intricate artwork for the first time. It struck me as a serious labor of love. And when someone puts so much love, attention and time into their work, they are bound to make something special. So, meet Calvin Nicholson…in his own words.

I am a strange loop. I am ever-growing and over-flowing. I am consuming you. I am feeding on your emotion, your mannerisms and your thoughts, as they play across your vibrations. I am a body of reference and influence. I am nothing.  I am everything. I am you. I am the speck of light at the end of the tunnel; I am the tendrils wrapped around you, holding you from it. I am a supernova. I am a black hole.
I am a universe.
I am.

I journeyed to Seattle, WA in the year 2000 with a team of visionaries from the bowels of  Mobile, Alabama. The exploration of the human subconscious by my most beloved artists of the time, in all genres of media, led me to similar explorations of my own. I wanted to read between my own lines and see what I found in the negative space:

The gray area that damned my logic to a place somewhere within the extremes of
1) Love and admiration for anything any one person, or force of energy could construct to
2) Blood-boiling, soul-shattering hatred toward, and a willingness to destroy, the same.

With every stroke of my ball point pen, I forge patterns representing the depths of my mind’s eye onto the page. Every undulation and jagged edge that your brain sees here is a representation of my state of existence in the moment.

The purpose of my work is to affect each viewer in a different and unique way. The interpretation of each piece is entirely subjective. Whatever anyone sees, or the feelings derived, is exactly what was meant for them to experience. I hope that you will see some small piece of yourself in my work, and perhaps find a connection between myself and you. Each work is an attempt on my part to communicate on a higher level.

These pieces are a part of me. They give me the time for meditation and reflection upon, and the solace from, myself that I need to keep going. I hope you enjoy the journey.

Thank you for your time and energy.
