Typography & Signage with Kellie Talbot

Kellie Talbot was born in Hawaii and as a daughter of a career marine lived on both coasts growing up. Her first jobs, in a print shop and as a sign painter, developed her love of typography and design.” That is how Kelly Talbot’s “About” page begins. And I couldn’t think of a better opening to describe her work. It’s all right there, plain as day. Sign painter? Check. But instead of painting signs, she’s now doing paintings of signs. Typography? Check. The “type as form” has hardly ever been more evident than it is in her work.

I think one of the most intriguing things about her work is her obsession with the older signs. The beaten down, corroded, rusty signs of a bygone era. They have a character and feeling of significance that modern day advertising boards simply lack.

Kellie has worked as a graphic designer for Cornish College of the Arts and has been an illustrator & designer of snowboards since 1993. She is currently the Art Director for Signal Snowboards and has been ever since its inception in 2003. You can currently view her work at Bherd Studios current gallery showing SubUrban” until Friday June 3rd.
