What You Should Know About Flood Protection Systems

Flood protection systems are used in order to avoid or minimize the destructive effects of flooding waters. Flood relief systems are commonly used for preventing damage caused by water in a building and in some cases they also help to restore the lost value of the damaged area. Flood damage can be difficult to repair if the damage is extensive and caused by high winds or floods that were very high. A wide range of different flood-related problems can cause such damage, including leaks in pipes or drains, burst pipes, damage to foundations due to water leakage or water seepage, as well as damage caused by natural disasters such as earthquakes or hurricanes. Some of the more common kinds of structural damages caused by water include ceiling leaks and basement flooding, as well as damage to walls and floors.

Methods of Flood Protection

There are various types of flood protection systems. Many buildings are designed to be adequately covered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Structured Water Proofing Program. In addition, many cities, counties and municipalities have their own flood protection requirements. These may include having the main sewer system replaced with a sump pump if it is older than 40 years, and using a sump pump during times of extremely high water pressure. Some counties also require that you have a sump pump as part of a flood prevention system.

If your building is not required to be protected under the existing flood protection systems, it is important to make sure that you have installed the right kinds of water protection systems. An example of one type of waterproofing system is the “green” flood protection system.
