Sorry for being away so long people. Life (and more specifically school finals!) severely cramped my style and pinched out any research & writing time. But I have survived and returned triumphant! Well, I survived at the very least. Anywho, on with the art!
What do you get when you combine a 22 year old art school dropout, a love for burlesque and a dive bar in Brooklyn? You get Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School!
Here is a few images I borrowed from the Dr. Sketchy’s Group Art Blog. There a a ton more and they are definitely worth the look!
Founded in 2005 by artists Molly Crabapple and A.V. Phibes, Dr. Sketchy’s is now run solely by Molly Crabapple (and her cadre of awesome helpers) since early ’06. As their website boldly claims, “Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art school is the world’s premier alt.drawing movement.”
Now, I’m no expert on “worldwide alt.drawing movements” but I can tell you I love the idea of hitting a dive bar, ordering a few drinks and drawing “glamorous underground performers in an atmosphere of boozy conviviality.” Since its inception in 2005, Dr. Sketchy’s has now spread to over 100 cities and 16 countries around the world.
Head to Dr. Sketchy’s website here. Find a chapter near you. Go check it out. Do some art. Let me know what you think. I know I found one here in Seattle and marked down the next class on my calender.
So, Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School, (and Molly Crabapple!) for mixing some of the coolest things ever invented together, Give Us Art! salutes you!
